Remote Sensing of Volcanic Plumes Using Microwave Weather Radars

The potential of using ground based weather radar systems for volcanic ash cloud detection and quantitative retrieval has been widely illustrated. The Iceland radar network, includes four radar systems marked with a yellow circle in the below map. Their potential for tephra detection and retrieval, has been fully exploited within FUTUREVOLC project by CETEMPS and HIMET through the design and implementation of a new version of the VARR algorithm whose outcomes are available in this web-page in real-time.
